How Financial Institutions Can Access the Canton Network

For a bank, broker or asset manager, getting onto Canton comes down to one decision: how much of the infrastructure to run in-house.

A direct presence on the network means operating a validator node. That gives an institution control, and it also means keeping that node connected, monitored, patched and upgraded for as long as it runs. Some institutions want that control and will build a team around it. Others want the presence on the network without the operational work behind it. A third group wants to bring a single asset onchain and has no reason to be a network operator at all.

Hydra X covers all three cases through HX Axis, Node-as-a-Service and Tokenisation Agent. They run on the same infrastructure and do different jobs.

Why access to Canton is an infrastructure question

Canton is a public blockchain network built for financial markets, with privacy and permissioning designed for regulated institutions. Applications spanning issuance, custody, trading and settlement can transact with one another while transaction data stays visible only to the parties entitled to see it. Independently operated systems interoperate without giving up the confidentiality regulated markets require.

Connecting to Canton is not a matter of pointing an application at an endpoint. An institution with its own presence on the network runs a validator, and that validator is production financial infrastructure. It has to stay running, stay monitored, and stay current as the network changes.

Institutions therefore arrive at the same fork: run the validator, have someone run it on your behalf, or structure the work so that you do not need one.

HX Axis: the infrastructure underneath

HX Axis is Hydra X’s institutional infrastructure stack for the Canton Network. It brings together validator operations, custody connectivity, market infrastructure support and issuer services, in custodial or non-custodial configurations depending on what the institution requires.

Axis is what Hydra X operates in production and the foundation the two services below are delivered on. Institutions engage with it through one of those two services.

Node-as-a-Service: your own validator, operated by Hydra X

Some institutions want their own validator and their own direct presence on Canton. What they do not want is another production system for internal teams to keep alive.

Hydra X provisions and manages the node environment: connectivity, monitoring, upgrades and maintenance. The institution keeps its own presence on the network and decides what it does there. Hydra X runs the validator underneath.

This separates two things institutions often assume are one purchase: holding a direct presence on Canton, and staffing the operation of the infrastructure that presence depends on. An institution can have the first without building the second.

Tokenisation Agent: issuing on Canton without a validator

An issuer may have an asset to tokenise and investors to reach, and no interest in operating network infrastructure to get there. For that issuer, standing up a validator adds cost and operational surface without adding much in return.

Under Tokenisation Agent, Hydra X structures and tokenises the asset on Canton, with regulated custody available in the same arrangement where it is required. The client works on the asset, the regulatory requirements and the commercial structure. Hydra X carries the infrastructure.

This suits institutions that want to issue on Canton without holding a permanent presence on the network of their own.

Which Canton access model fits which institution

The choice follows from what the institution is trying to do.

An institution that expects a long-term presence on Canton will want its own validator, with Node-as-a-Service operating it. An institution whose interest is issuing or tokenising a specific asset has little reason to run a validator and can use Tokenisation Agent instead. Axis sits underneath both.

For institutions working out how to build, operate or issue on Canton, Hydra X can design the operating model around the role the institution actually wants to hold.
